Twilight is to be made into a animated series

Lionsgate is expanding the “Twilight” franchise with a new animated series, Variety has confirmed.

Michael Burns, vice chairman of Lionsgate, shared the news during a Q&A at the Morgan Stanley media conference on Tuesday, revealing, “We’re going to go out with the ‘Twilight’ series, an animated series, I think there’ll be a lot of interest in that.”

Last April, Variety reported that a “Twilight” TV series adaptation was in very early development at Lionsgate Television.

The animated series would be based on the Stephanie Meyer book series of the same name, which was previously adapted into a film franchise, starring Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner.

There were four “Twilight” novels — “Twilight,” “New Moon,” “Eclipse” and “Breaking Dawn” — published between 2005 and 2008. In 2015, Meyer released the book “Life and Death: Twilight Reimagined,” which gender-swapped the two main characters, Bella and Edward. Meyer then released “Midnight Sun” in 2020, which told the story of the first book from Edward’s perspective rather than Bella’s.

The film franchise, collectively known as “The Twilight Saga,” was comprised of five films (the “Breaking Dawn” book was split into two) that were released between 2008 and 2012. The five “Twilight” films grossed over $3 billion at the global box office in total.

Burns also revealed that Lionsgate is expanding the “John Wick” franchise with a new series, saying, “I think we’ll take one of our great action franchises starring Keanu Reeves, I think it’ll be a television series.”

Reeves portrayed the titular gun-fu action hero in four films, released between 2014 and 2023. The upcoming “John Wick” show comes on the heels of the prequel miniseries “The Continental,” which premiered on Peacock in September 2023.

Twilight TV series is in the works

The Twilight Saga is getting the television treatment, as sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that a series version of author Stephenie Meyer’s best-selling book series is in early development via Lionsgate Television.

Sinead Daly, whose credits include Tell Me Lies, The Walking Dead: World Beyond, Raised by Wolves, Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency and The Get Down, is attached to write the script for Twilight. Sources say Daly is working with Lionsgate TV to determine what the specific take on Twilight will be and if it will be a remake of Meyer’s books or a different offshoot.

Sources say author Meyer is expected to be involved in the television adaptation. Wyck Godfrey and former Lionsgate Motion Picture Group co-president Erik Feig, who during his tenure at Summit Entertainment bought the rights to the Twilight book series after Paramount Pictures passed, are both attached to exec produce the television take. Godfrey’s Temple Hill banner produced all five of the movies that Feig’s Summit distributed. The film franchise, which made stars of Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner, collectively grossed more than $3.4 billion worldwide.

Reps for Lionsgate Television declined to comment.

Twilight is a major piece of Lionsgate’s library. In 2017, five years after Breaking Dawn: Part 2 wrapped up Meyer’s film adaptation, Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer told Wall Street during an earnings call that “there are a lot more stories to be told, and we’re ready to tell them when our creators are ready to tell those stories,” in reference to both Twilight and The Hunger Games franchises.

Word of a Twilight TV series comes as Lionsgate has been negotiating with multiple bidders to potentially spin off its studio business and premium cable network Starz by the end of September 2023. The Lionsgate studio business, which includes film and TV production divisions, grew revenue 25 percent to nearly $900 million in the third quarter.

Lionsgate TV also recently announced plans to revive Spartacus with a sequel series from creator Steven S. DeKnight. Lionsgate TV produced both Spartacus: Blood and Sand and the prequel miniseries Gods of the Arena as the franchise also remains a valuable piece of the studio’s library. Lionsgate and Starz also recently revived Party Down, and the studio has been exploring a sequel to former Showtime comedy Weeds, as reboots remain easier to both market and cut through the clutter while also helping to increase the value of years-old library titles.

The Twilight films recently moved their streaming home to NBCUniversal’s Peacock after a stint at Netflix.

The timing of the Twilight series comes as HBO Max recently confirmed that it was in early development of a Harry Potter television adaptation with plans for a decade-long run of J.K. Rowling’s beloved book series with the controversial author attached as an executive producer. Genre programming continues to remain in high demand as Amazon last year launched a new take on The Lord of the Rings, with Warner Bros. Discovery also planning on making new installments of the feature films based on the J.R.R. Tolkien works.

Daly is repped by WME, Kaplan/Perrone Entertainment and attorney Ashley Silver.

Taylor Lautner talks with Entertainment Weekly on the Twilight fans reaction to the rivalry with his character Jacob Black & Robert Pattinson’s character Edward Cullen

“There wasn’t a competitiveness between me and Rob, but having that constant reminder, it definitely had an impact.”

Taylor Lautner is opening up about how the fervor surrounding the now-infamous “Team Edward versus Team Jacob” debate at the height of the Twilight craze affected him and his relationship with his vampiric costar Robert Pattinson

The actor said he’d “be lying” if he didn’t admit that the intense fan reaction over which character deserved to date Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) didn’t impact him personally while visiting The Toast podcast Thursday with his wife — who is also named Taylor Lautner.

He explained that the adamant response from Twihards was a “very strange” experience, especially since he often traveled the world in support of the franchise, only to suddenly find himself “being in different cities and having thousands of screaming fans either take your side or the other guy’s side.”

“I was so young,” Lautner said. “I was 16 when Twilight came out, 17 for New Moon and Eclipse. I finished the franchise by the time I was 19.”

The actor added that he wished everyone could have just let the rivalry play out on screen and not in real life. “Like, we’re a team. We’re both just trying to make the best movies,” Lautner said. “But it was a little bizarre, the competitiveness. There wasn’t a competitiveness between me and Rob, but having that constant reminder, it definitely had an impact.”

And, if he’s really being honest, Lautner now understands why some fans preferred Edward (Pattinson). The actor said he’s gained a slightly different perspective on his character, Jacob, after having rewatched a few of the films while bored in a hotel room last year.

“As I was watching it, I was like, ‘I kind of get it. Jacob’s a little annoying,'” he admitted. “Like, I love Jacob and his heart, but he’s a little annoying.”

New Paper Back editions of Twilight and Midnight Sun!

“Twilight” fans desperate for something fresh to sink their fangs into will get some tasty new morsels from Little, Brown Books for Young Readers early next year. The publisher has announced the paperback release of Stephenie Meyer’s “Midnight Sun,” along with paperback editions of the entire “Twilight” Saga with new cover looks, are due to hit shelves Feb. 1, 2022.

“It was such a thrill to see readers enthusiastically return to the world of Twilight with the long-awaited release of ‘Midnight Sun’ and we’re excited to offer the fans a new collection of paperbacks featuring bold, contemporary takes on the original iconic cover designs,” Megan Tingley, executive vice president and publisher of Little, Brown Books for Young Readers, said in a press release.

“Midnight Sun,” the long-anticipated retelling of “Twilight” from vampire Edward Cullen’s perspective, rather than Bella Swan’s, was first published in August 2020. It shot to the top of USA TODAY’s Best-Selling Books list, selling more than 1 million copies in its first week. The novel held the top spot for four weeks and remained on the list for 43 consecutive weeks.

Meyer’s first four books in the series spent more than four years on the USA TODAY Best-Selling Books list and spawned five blockbuster films and a legion of “Twihard” fans. The saga, which includes “New Moon,” “Eclipse,” “Breaking Dawn,” “The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner: An Eclipse Novella,” “The Twilight Saga: The Official Illustrated Guide” and “Life and Death: Twilight Reimagined,” has sold more than 160 million copies worldwide and has been translated into 49 languages.

After the success of “Midnight Sun,” will there be a new second book in the retelling? Maybe, but don’t expect it to be Edward-centric. At Books-A-Million’s virtual live event with the author last year, Meyer shared with fans what she knows for now.

“There are two more books I think in the world that I want to write. I have got them outlined and a chapter written I think of the first one, so I know it’s there. I am not ready to do that right now, I want to do something brand new,” she said. “For me, a lot of the joy of writing comes from creating and I really want to do a new world and new rules and new mythology. Mythology is kind of my thing.”
